Frontier Chemistry Project

  • It is important to identify a plant/root correctly because, since many plants look similar, but not all plants have medicinal properties, you could be hurting yourself with an incorrect identification.
  • It would be prudent to know a variety of species from other regions just in case you ever find yourself in those regions.
  • It would make a significant difference if you were travelling in different seasons because different plant bloom at different times and the flowers of a medicinal plant might have different properties than the stem or roots.
  • As a scientist, it is important to develop relationships with local peoples because locals oftentimes know the habitat better than you.
  • I would not trust my knowledge of local flora to treat disease because with every plant with medicinal properties there is one with poisonous properties, and I don't trust my identification skills enough to get it right every single time.
